The Irish record

What Ireland actually decided, and when

Ireland changed its law on legal sex in 2015 with almost no debate, built a gender service that its own clinicians publicly criticised, and left schools to work out the rest. This site holds the documents: the Acts, the HSE papers, the Oireachtas debates and the Department of Education circulars, each with a date and a link.

This Was the Doctor's Solution to My Psych Med Reaction | Beyond Gender Clips

In this Beyond Gender clip, Irish academic Mary Ann Kenny describes being prescribed a cascade of psychiatric medications after her husband's sudden death, and having her reported adverse drug reaction dismissed by clinicians who offered books and art therapy instead. From an Irish angle, her account touches on how HSE mental health services, the Mental Health Act 2001 and HPRA's adverse-reaction reporting scheme are supposed to safeguard patients, and what happens when a grieving parent's distress is managed with escalating prescriptions rather than appropriate psychological support.

The facts behind this episode

Why a facts site for Ireland

Irish coverage of this subject has been thin, and much of what circulates comes from Britain or the United States. Irish law, Irish healthcare and Irish schools work differently, and the dates matter. Everything here is taken from a document anyone can open: the Irish Statute Book, HSE publications, Oireachtas records, court judgments and peer-reviewed research. Where the site draws a conclusion, it says so.

About this site

The conversations

The Beyond Gender podcast, hosted by the Irish psychotherapist Stella O'Malley with Mia Hughes and Dr Bret Alderman, interviews the people behind these documents. Its Irish companion site collects the episodes that concern Ireland; this site holds the paperwork they refer to.
